Whether you’re moving across the city or across the country, relocating when you have pets can be a daunting task. With millions of Americans owning pets, many moving companies are providing tips and resources to assist their clients in planning a stress-free move for the whole family – even Fido.
By law, moving services are not allowed to transport pets, but many companies have websites, brochures, or representatives who can provide suggestions on how to ensure a smooth move for families with dogs.
About two years ago when I relocated across the country, I researched many long distance moving services. For a fee, some companies can provide additional movers to make the process go more quickly for you and your animal, while others can actually do the packing for you – so you and your animal can actually go for a nice long walk!
More recently, when I was using local moving services, I found that many companies have items to make moving with pets easier. For example, if you’re moving yourself you can rent a furniture dolly to make lifting heavy items go faster. Or you can put furniture pads over certain items, which might help with dogs who don’t like change in their environment.
A little online research uncovers some great tips from moving services for animal owners, including:
- Make sure your animal’s vaccinations are up to date if you are going to be flying, as all major airlines require a recent health certificate from your veterinarian.
- Your animal should always wear identification, which should include your new address and phone number in case your animal gets lost in your new home.
- Check with your city or county to ensure you comply with any licensing requirements for your new home.
- Ensure that your new residence allows your particular breed and size of pet, especially if you’re moving into an apartment, condominium, or HOA community.
- Be sure not to pack away your pet’s favorite items, as you may want to keep them with you if you’re moving across country. Simple things such as using the same food bowl or chew toys can help your animal feel more relaxed during the move.
- Ask your veterinarian for advice about feeding your animal during a move. Some will instruct you to avoid providing water for several hours prior to a flight, to help prevent accidents. You will also want to have animal food handy between flights in case of delays.
Lastly, if you don’t think you’re up for traveling with your animal, ask your moving company if they can refer you to a animal moving company. With the right moving company and good planning, you and your animal can avoid moving headaches and enjoy your new home.
