  • Three Reasons to Get Pet Insurance

    January 28th, 2008 · No Comments

One year we had three cats get very sick and require a lot of medical attention. If we had gotten pet insurance before that happened, we could have saved a lot of money.

Here are three reasons for getting pet insurance before your pet requires hundreds or thousands of dollars in vet care.

    1. Vet cost is going up

It is obvious that going to the vet is getting more and more expensive. But if you love your pet, you want to be able to take it to someone who can heal him or her. That’s why pet insurance has become very popular the last few years.

Whether it is for the annual check up or a major illness or accident a trip to the doctor can be an expensive proposition. With the right kind of insurance pet health can be assured at a fraction of the cost.

    2. Could be the difference between getting proper care of letting the animal suffer

Many times when an animal becomes ill or injured, the family has to choose if they can afford to have the animal treated by the family’s vet, or make it suffer. With insurance pet healthcare is going to come with a small price tag and make it affordable to treat the sick animal.

It can mean the difference in providing adequate care and eliminating the need for making a tough decision about the animal’s life. It’s something you probably don’t think about until your little friend is sick or injured and you don’t have the money needed to get the care he or she needs.

Our friends had a cat that suddenly got sick. The vet determined the cat had ingested something that was now caught in the intestines (turned out to be a shoelace). The surgery to remove the obstruction cost over $1,000.

Because they did not have pet insurance they had to put it on their credit card and gradually pay it off. Many families could not have afforded the surgery at all, resulting in the death of a beloved pet.

    3. Makes regular vet check ups affordable so that major problems can be avoided

Similar to the health maintenance organizations for humans, pet insurance will be accompanied by a deductible for office visits as well as any emergency care. Depending on the type of coverage chosen, as long as the pet owner takes the animal to a participating vet the fees for the care come out of the monthly premiums. This makes regular check ups affordable so that many major illnesses can be discovered before they get bad.

Many policies cover not only regular care but also major illnesses or catastrophic injuries. Policies can be found that provide post-surgical care and can also provide for the pet’s well-being if the owner is ill and cannot properly care for the animal.

This could be very important for those who are elderly and who might need to spend time in the hospital once in awhile. With the right insurance pet care can be assured so that the owner is not worried about their animal while they are in the hospital or convalescing in another facility.

When buying pet insurance the owner is not just insuring their pet’s health. They are also insuring their peace of mind in knowing their pet will be taken care of in times of need.

Here’s a video that talks about the benefits of pet insurance. If you want to get insurance, be sure to read the fine print. Some people have found that if their pet develops health problems, the insurance will drop the policy when the renewal comes up.
