The need of Training Collars for Dogs

September 29th, 2009 · No Comments

Having a new dog can be a lot of fun, but training him is often a challenge. In this regard, training collars for dogs are considered very practical tools, although dog owners are advised to study their options in order to make a good decision that will satisfy their dogs’ needs. There are several manufacturers of training collars for dogs, and each manufacturer usually offers several models, each one with specific qualities.

With so many options to choose from, the average dog owner can find himself or herself overwhelmed, but if the specific needs of each dog owner are clearly identified, then the selection becomes much easier.

Types of training collars for dogs

Choosing the right type of collar can be key in the success of the training. While all training collars for dogs have basically the same goal, each kind approaches the task in a slightly different way. One option is an electronic collar. The electronic collar gives the dog a small, harmless, jolt of static electricity whenever the dog misbehaves.

Choke collars are another option. As the name implies, a chocke collar will constrict the dog’s neck whenever the dog pulls too hard or the owner pulls the leash towards him or her. Dog owners must learn carefully how to use such collars, however, in order to avoid really hurting the dog. Lastly, there are citronella collars, which spray the muzzle of a dog with a lemon-like odor, either automatically or with the push of a button from a remote control.

Regardless of which training collar you select to use, it’s paramount that your dog understands that training is taking place and that the instructions on what the pet is or isn’t supposed to be doing are clear. Otherwise, the animal will just become fearful, and resentful, not knowing what to do to avoid punishment. In the end, the training collar will slowly become obsolete as the dog assimilates the new behavior and incorportates it as normal part of its life.
