Tips To Pug Care

September 9th, 2008 · No Comments

Brushing at least once a week and bathing whenever the Pug dog requires it are two of the grooming requirements necessary to maintaining Pug health. Since the Pug sheds a lot of fur, the more often you groom the better chance you have of reducing the amount of fur that they leave behind on your furniture, in your car and on your clothes. There isn’t much to be done when it comes to the daily care of a Pug, but you do want to spend extra time and attention to the wrinkles on their face.

The Pug will often go around sticking their nose into many things due to their curious nature. This is why you need to clean the wrinkles regularly, otherwise dirt can buildup. The wrinkles can also accumulate moisture if they aren’t cleaned regularly which can lead to itching, irritation and sometimes a bad infection. It isn’t that hard to clean the wrinkles, just use a soft tissue to clean the wrinkles regularly so you can avoid dirt and moisture buildup, which can result in Pug health issues.
Regularly trimming your Pugs nails is also important just as it is with other breeds. However, since these nails can become caught on blankets and other items it is important for Pug health that you trim them. It can also be painful for your Pug to walk if the nails become too long. There are many vet and grooming places that will trim the nails for you if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself. Just make sure you keep an eye on your Pugs nails since they will grow fast.

Pugs are different from other breeds in the sense that they really enjoy water. So bathing is a relatively easy task, you just need to avoid getting water in the ears which can lead to infections and getting shampoo in their sensitive eyes. However, let your Pug play in the water for a while if they want to since this can make bath time an enjoyable event for both you and your Pug.
Another important part of caring for Pug health is to keep the ears dry and clean. Since Pugs have a narrow ear canal they are very likely to get ear infections. Never use a cotton swab when cleaning their ears, rather use a soft tissue or a cotton ball. Take your Pug to the vet if you notice them scratching their ears or shaking their head a lot. It is also a good idea to seek medical attention if you notice a weird smell coming from the ears since this is a good sign that they have a fungus or infection. Since Pugs are so prone to ear infections it is likely that you will have a bottle or two of old ear drops around the house. Never use these since the infection can be made worse. Rather seek approval by a licensed veterinarian before using old drops and make sure you clean the bottle well and store it in the refrigerator.

Proper Pug care goes a long way in protecting your dogs health. Finding the best Pug diet you can afford is also important.
