Dog Crates and Kennels – A Real Advantage For Dogs and Owners Alike

March 18th, 2010 · No Comments

Dogs, just like humans, enjoy having an area they can make their own. This is achievable with kennels and crates for dogs. It is more usual to use kennels when your dog is outside the house and crates when your dog is inside your home. If your pet is going to stay outside for prolonged stretches of time, and above all if you don’t have a fenced-in yard, you will need a dog kennel to keep your pet secure and comfortable. The size of the kennel will be determined by how large your four-legged friend is, and don’t forget to take into account (if your dog isn’t already full grown) how large your pet will eventually get. A lot of people opt for either a wire mesh kennel or a galvanized steel kennel for outdoor use. You have options for the ground covering ranging from the original dirt in your backyard to gravel to a concrete slab. Do not forget that if your pet likes to dig, they may possibly be able to dig underneath the kennel and escape if you stick with dirt or sand. It is also good to put some kind of a covering over the kennel. A replaceable tarp that you can fasten down is a great option or you may decide to go with a shingle roof. It will depend on how much cash you are prepared to spend.

Dog crates and kennels come in numerous shapes and sizes but a good instance of a kennel is the Jewett-Cameron Champion dog kennel for which you will have to shell out about two hundred dollars. It is simple to build and it is designed for convenience, safety and long life. It is built of galvanized steel that gives you rust resistance and it will also shield your pet from stray dogs and wild animals. A tarp could easily be located over the top of the kennel. Its dimensions are 5 feet long x 5 feet wide x 4 feet high. If you need something larger Jewett-Cameron offers a kennel that is 10 feet long x 6 feet high x 5 feet wide and will set you back about four hundred dollars. It has the same good characteristics as the other kennel but it gives your four-legged friend a lot more leg room.

Dog crates also come in steel but, in addition, you’ll see them in wood, canvas and plastic. These work better inside your household and will give your four-legged friend a place that they know belongs to them where they feel safe and sound. They are also practicable for carrying your canine friend to vet appointments and for other travel requirements. A lot of the timber crates are manufactured to resemble a piece of furniture and they can be manufactured to blend in with your furniture and even used as a coffee table. They begin at about two hundred dollars. The wire crates begin at around $60, as do the canvas crates. On the less expensive side, there are cheap dog crates made with plastic that will set you back around forty dollars but, not surprisingly, price will depend not only on the size of your canine friend but also on the features that are important to you.

Dog crates and kennels can be a real advantage to both you and your four-legged friend. For outside, they will have a place where they feel safe and you can feel confident leaving them in the knowledge that they are in a contained area and are content. For indoors, both and you will be contented in the knowledge that they have a place to make their own where they can retreat and feel warm and relaxed.
