In some cases the magnetic cat door operates on batteries or electricity, but most do not which means they are not subject to battery or electrical failure and are ever-lasting. This feature is very convenient, as the door won’t let the cat be locked out during bad weather because the storm kocked out the electrical system of the neighborhood.
Understanding Magnetic Doors
The magnetic pet door responds to a small magnet that is attached to a collar worn around the cat’s neck or to keys worn on the cat’s collar. When the cat comes next to the door, the detection of the magnet makes the system open the door. The system thus allows the cat to come and go as it pleases while the door is locked when the cat is away.
The main purpose of the magnetic cat door is to let the cat into or out the house without the help of the owner, who can even go out on vacation without worrying about the cat.
Security
One of the safety features of the magnetic cat door is that it only opens for your cat and for nothing else, locking itself after the cat is inside the house. So, if your cat is chased by animals or by mean spirited children, once it’s inside the house, the door will protect it from pursuers. As a nice addition, thieves can’t use the door to get into your house either.
Some magnetic cat doors even have some extra features that will allow you to modify how and when access is granted. Magnetic cat doors aren’t really harder to install than regular cat doors.
A magnetic pet door is resistant to water, which means that you won’t have to worry about rain or winter affecting it, and it won’t let water come into your house either. They are recommended for cats six to nine months of age, but are not recommended for kittens.
Price
Generally cost around $50. There are some expensive models that go up to $100. Custom made models are also available, but they cost more.
